The Golden Shower Tree (*Cassia fistula*) is a flowering tree native to the Indian subcontinent and other parts of Southeast Asia. It is a medium-sized deciduous tree that typically grows to a height of 9 to 12 meters, with a canopy spread of 7.5 to 10.5 meters. The crown spreads out like an umbrella, featuring dense foliage. Its leaves are pinnately compound and light green, turning yellow in the autumn before falling. The tree is best known for its spectacular yellow flowers.
Flowers: In early summer, the Golden Shower Tree produces clusters of large, showy flowers. The blossoms are bright yellow, tubular, and pendulous, with five petals. They form long, drooping racemes that create a stunning visual effect. Because the branches are laden with golden blooms, the tree is commonly known as the "Golden Shower Tree."
Fruit: After the flowering season, the tree produces slender, dark brown or black seed pods. These pods can reach up to 60 centimeters (2 feet) in length and contain several hard, black seeds. The pods remain on the tree throughout the winter.
Growing Environment and Distribution: The Golden Shower Tree is well-suited to tropical and subtropical regions. It thrives in sunlight and adapts to a variety of soil types. As an ornamental tree, it is commonly found in parks, gardens, and along streets and avenues.
Landscape Uses: Valued for its brilliant flowers and attractive foliage, the Golden Shower Tree is frequently planted in gardens and parks as an ornamental specimen. The vivid yellow flowers contrast sharply with the green leaves, making the tree a focal point in the landscape.
Care: Maintenance is relatively simple. Once established, the tree is drought-tolerant and requires minimal pruning. Regular watering during dry spells promotes optimal growth and flowering.
